You may remember a few weeks ago when we featured wombat-headed as our Aussie Word of the Week. Well this week we have another great Aussie slang insult: pie-eater.
A pie-eater is a person of little or no importance. The phrase, which has been around since the 1940s, metaphorically refers to a person whose narrow view of the world is given away by the fact that they eat nothing but meat pies.
The Macquarie Dictionary also refers to a pie-eater as a ‘small-time crook’ or an ‘insignificant, second rate person.’
Something to think about when you are digging into your next meat pie at the footy.
Each week, we have a look at a slang word from Australian English. You can see other Aussie Word of the Week posts from the Macquarie Dictionary here.
