Contributor's comments: I lived in Queensland (both the South East, Far North and the Far West of Queensland for 28 years from my birth, and never heard "evening" used to describe the period after midday (which was 'afternoon' or 'arvo'). 'Evening' was used for the period after 5 pm, usually just before and after sunset.
Contributor's comments: What? 'Evening' means the period after midday? That's news to this Queenslander of almost 50 years standing! Surely not - 'evening' means after 6pm or thereabouts.
Contributor's comments: In Brisbane and elsewhere in Aust in my experience, evening means the time between dusk and bedtime.
Contributor's comments: While teaching in a rural school near Warwick (Qld) in the early 1980s, I was more than once caught out by parents using "evening" to refer to any time after lunch. I assure you, this usage was common in that particular community.
Contributor's comments: While working in the Cobar area (western NSW) in 1948/49 I found that " this evenin' " was commonly used by the local people when referring to the period after noon but not after nightfall.
Contributor's comments: Means any time after noon to a lot of blokes frm around the Tweed River-Murwillumbah area of north eastern N.S.W.: "I won't be coming to work this evening because I'm going fishing."
